In 2006, when her grandparents suggested she take over their farm, Sandrine De Maggio hesitated. A secretary/accountant in Bastia, she never imagined she was made for gumboots or milking sheep... Nevertheless, she agreed to follow an agricultural training course, and quickly discovered her vocation.
Two years later, Sandrine moved to Macinaghju determined to set up a modern and dynamic company reflecting her own personality: "The barn was old and the flock ageing. Turning things round was difficult, but I had the support of my family and the neighbouring farmers." First of all, 80 ewes were bought from Marie-Paule Cesari, and 15 others given by Andre Albertini. Today, Sandrine has a herd of 145 ewes which graze on thirty acres of planted meadows.
"I love this job, mainly because I’m as one with these animals. These are my kids in a way!" says Sandrine who gives her sheep names like "Mimi", "Choco", "Greedy"!
An earnest researcher of authentic flavours, Sandrine produces a fine specialty, Divinu U whose sales she monitors with great care. The young woman believes a strong agricultural policy is necessary: "It would enliven the industry and preserve our identity. I haven’t done all this to find my cheese stacked on a shelf next to artificial industrial products!"
