When Isabelle was a little girl, she used to play among her grandmother and father’s animals. Cows - kept solely for the benefit of the family - would graze in the family fields in San Gavinu di Fiumorbu. She knew already that she wanted to become a shepherdess. Her wish came true in 1993 when Isabelle met her future husband Pascal, who owned a farm. She was raising her own herd of fifty goats three years later. “It didn’t take me long to decide on what sort of livestock I wanted to keep. The capra corsa (the Corsican goat) of course! I am particularly fond of these endearing animals.”
Bluetongue, a non-contagious viral disease that affects all ruminants, struck in 2001 and decimated the herd of goats Isabelle’s husband looked after. “I’d sold my goats in 1999 so I could look after my eldest daughter Maria Dumenica.” Isabelle admits that “it was a challenging time – fate dealt us a real blow. We had to give up raising goats and we decided on a change of course.”
These days, Isabelle is much tougher and resolutely determined; she is equally passionate about keeping her herd of 80 cattle and constantly improving her activity. “À chì dorme, ùn piglia pesciu’*, as my grandmother used to say!” Lisa Maria, her nine-year-old daughter, skips along by her side. They walk down together, to see the herd of goats kept by her mother’s sister-in-law, just below Ferme Suartella. “That reminds me of someone!”’ smiles Isabelle.
*A sleeping man never catches any fish.
