Do olive trees have a soul? Her close contact with this generous and immortal tree has convinced Mathilde Poggioli of it. And from childhood, it seemed written in the stars that she would grow olive trees.
And then? A stroke of luck, a bit of optimism, an overdose of work, sprinkled with an undying passion...
The recipe worked quite well: in 1984, in the San Gavinu di Tenda area, Mathilde and her husband bought a property where olive tree already flourished. "We took advantage of the mature trees there to get the project started right away." Ever since, her AOP olive oil operation has become a family affair. "Everyone helps out. My husband and son harvest the olives using nets, and we then bring them to the mill. My daughter handles distribution to different outlets in Saint-Florent and Bastia."
Mathilde produces her oil exclusively from olives of the native Nebbiu variety: the Biancaghja. "I use organic methods, and am in the process of a complete conversion..." she tells us.
Sweet and fruity, this olive oil is on sale in the family home as well as various groceries in the area. So… is it the caring soul within Mathilde’s ageing olive trees that gives this wonderful oil such a special flavour?
