Some folks can spend their childhood surrounded by herds of sheep - learning how to herd a flock of ewes and the secrets of traditional cheese making - and still nurture dreams and ambitions of a very different nature. Such was the case for young Marie-Rose Gugliemi.
With an early passion for arts and crafts, Marie-Rose dreamt of a career in art of journalism. She set out to study plastic arts at Corté University, but when her father, a shepherd, decided to retire, Marie-Rose realised she couldn’t bear to watch her family heritage vanish away into the air. “It was a revelation for me – I really didn’t expect to be taking on the family business, but all of a sudden I realised this was where I belonged; here among my father’s ewes.”
That was 20 years ago, and Marie-Rose hasn’t regretted her choice for a single second. “It’s hard work, but it’s truly fulfilling.” Seeing her preparing to pass on the family heritage as she herds the flock with her nieces, it’s hard not to believe that she made the right decision.
