Pierre-Paul Nicolai certainly has a mind of his own; only 23 and he’s already attached to his chosen vocation: la tarra (the land).  A model of youthful dynamism and hands-on work ethic, this young man has already been cultivating his ancestral farm of Helichrysum plants, (commonly known as “Everlastings”) for the last 5 years. He goes about his task with a simple, singular work ethic: “If I don’t do it, who will?” Nicolai’s father, Jean-Louis, working alongside his son, confirms our impressions: “Pierre-Paul is an absolute grafter; he’s always out in the fields. I think in 4 and a half years he hasn’t allowed himself one single week of time off.” One thing’s for sure: with this business, there’s no shortage of things to keep the man busy. In 2010, three hectares of Everlastings were planted, then three more the next year and two more in 2015. These were followed by four hectares of vines. “Agriculture should be the driving force for our island, and young people with ideas and plans should be encouraged to pursue them for the sake of our common future,” explains Pierre-Paul with militant passion. He knows that all this effort will pay off as time goes on, “but you have to be very patient,” he says philosophically.

So, to pass the time this tireless you young man will soon be keeping himself busy with the renovation of a 450-tree olive farm!
