Arriving from Algeria in the early 1960s, it was Pierre Richarme’s father who wrote the first pages of the Domaine Pero Longo’s story, in the splendid Ortolo valley.“My father used the wine-making methods he knew from Algeria. His wine was doing the job but when I took over I wanted to deeply change the domaine’s philosophy”, explains Pierre Richarme. And the change was radical to say the least, as in 1994 Pierre took up all the vines and replanted local varieties exclusively.
“You need to know how to listen to and observe nature. Local varieties are local for a reason. These are the ones that are best suited to our terroir and produce the most interesting wines. But my wife Marie-Louise and I wanted to go further by converting into a biodynamic domaine. This implies certain constraints, but in the long-term we have found our footing”, confesses Pierre Richarme.
A tireless worker, a jack of all trades who’s passionate about technique, Pierre created and set up pretty much everything with his own bare hands: his oval wine tanks, the luxury cut stone cottages, the swimming pools, the restaurant… in short, an unshakable will and limitless energy have allowed the Domaine Pero Longo to be recognised for what it is!
