The Domaine du Mont Saint-Jean stretches along the hills of Antisanti, a small village in the Rogna Inda micro-region. The vast 115-hectare vineyard in the heart of the maquis is the pride and joy of the Pouyau family.
Firmly rooted in this land that is so dear to him, Roger, the patriarch – a 5th-generation Pouyau family wine-grower – has been at the helm since 1977.
Just like his ancestors, Roger heeded the earth’s call: “When a family tradition like this continues over several centuries, it’s out of the question to want to escape one’s destiny! One must take great pleasure in grasping it! It is clear that this must be written in our genes!”
Roger thus abandoned the job he held first as an optician in Paris and then Nice.
With a “brevet” or certificate as a technician in viticulture and oenology in hand, Roger resurrected old and forgotten grape varieties such as Aleatico. The domaine now produces protected designation of origin (PDO) and IGP Île de Beauté wines.
Their own bottling and cellar-packaging techniques have been standard for a long time, always respecting the old ways.
“Today, even though we have modern technology available to us, we need to preserve traditional winemaking methods. Our ancestors bequeathed this legacy to us.”
Roger is dedicated to preserving these traditions and feeds his knowledge with old oenology handbooks. A passion he has passed on to his daughter Julia, the 6th generation!
