As a child, Pierre-François de Bernardi would help with grape picking and sales from the family wine cellar. At the age of six, he left the island for Marseille. Later, following business studies that allowed him to travel all over Europe, he began retraining as a winegrower in the Var department thanks to his wife. “Marion's aunt, Régine Sumeire, entrusted me with the management of a vineyard,” says Pierre-François.
He took on the management of Château de la Tour l’Évêque in 2019, an 83-hectare vineyard located in Pierrefeu-du-Var. At 33, he decided to take over the family vineyard in Patrimoniu. Pierre-François represents the fourth generation of this now over seven hectare vineyard.
“My uncles, Jean-Paul and Jean-Laurent de Bernardi, always worked organically,” continues the young grower. “No weedkillers or soil fertilisers are used—and no inputs during the winemaking process.”
Assisted by his cousin, Anthony Ceccaldi, Pierre-François hopes to receive the Demeter biodynamic certification for the 2020 vintage.
His intention is to work hard on the quality of wine at the Clos de Bernardi. With the new cellar project he has, nestled among the vines, success is assured!
