"I was 20 during the events of ‘68. So you could say that I’m one of those revolutionaries who’s never grown up!" jokes Jean Mary.

This militant idealist, a playful type, worked as an industrial technician for ten years in Lyon. Then, drawn by the hometown of his parents, he returned to Poggio Mezzana in 1977 and set up a beekeeping business.

The first twenty years represented "a battle", as the industry struggled with threats from all sides. But Jean isn’t someone who gives up easily. He fought relentlessly to make Corsican honey a product with its very own identity. A first victory was won in January 1998, when an Appellation d'Origine (AOC) was awarded. But for John, the battle was far from over. President of the AOC union from 1999 to 2007, he works tirelessly to promote and defend the island’s beekeeping industry.

Today, still searching for perfection, he produces delicious honey, while continuing to improve, "because the most important thing is to create." His 250 hives buzz quietly in an enchanting setting in the open bush, overlooking the sea. When he looks back on his recent life, Jean expresses delight at having helped unite Corsican beekeepers, and being able to pass on his passion for bees. His daughter Claire, admiring his long struggle, is determined to take up the baton and continue the adventure.

1968 was certainly a prolific year!
