“Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” (Winston Churchill)

This adage might as well be the subtitle to Joseph-Marie Sabiani’s career: “My parents weren’t shepherds and I started out from almost nothing; a little wooden hut and a handful of animals,” says the shepherd from Corte in central Corsica. “But I always knew what I’d end up doing, and nothing could put me off.” Though he remains humble and reserved in the wake of success, there’s no doubt that it’s taken serious amounts of both will and effort to achieve the modern, dynamic farming enterprise he runs today, looking after 350 sheep and 250 goats and producing one of the region’s best-loved cheeses.

“Today I’m lucky to be able to step back a bit from the operations. My sister and my father look after the cheese production and I have somebody to help me manage the flock as well,” he explains.

Now a businessman as well as a shepherd, Joseph-Marie is looking towards a slightly more serene stage in the development of his operation, as he plans to open a farmhouse-inn in the hills overlooking the town of Corte.
