The story of Mickael Battestini’s early career seems like a case of misplaced destiny: “I was working as a civil servant in the coastal town of Maran, but I knew that wasn’t where I was supposed to end up. Somehow I never took the plunge of moving out of the town, but every night after work I went back into the mountains,” Mickael tells us, continuing: “Nearly all my friends were shepherds, and whenever I had room in my timetable I’d go up and join them with their flocks.” One day, the desire to stay had grown so strong Mickael became a shepherd “by proxy”. In 2010, he decided to ‘take the bull by the horns’, going back to school and starting his own farming business.
“I had to build everything with my own hands, with help from my friends and family. Even though the beginning wasn’t easy, I had spent enough time with other shepherds to know I was on the right track.”
Over the next few years Michael’s flock grew, along with his confidence and mastery of the craft; he now looks towards a happy and prosperous future in the majestic shadow of the Popolasca Mountains.
