While some people ask themselves questions regarding their own professional path, others, like Barthélémy Giancoli, don’t have such qualms. “In my family we have always been herders, and I confess that I asked myself no such questions. It was always obvious for me,” says the young herder from Pero Casevecchie. Naturally, it is with his father that learns the tricks of the trade.
“Theory training is good, but nothing can replace experience. My father can tell if a goat has a problem simply by the way it is walking. Growing up with him and having watched him work for as long as I can remember, I undoubtedly saved precious time when I decided to set up my own farm,” Barthélémy says. Whether it’s his father, his mother, his uncle, or his wife who he is currently teaching to make cheese, Barthelemy’s family is never far away. With one or two exceptions, the village is occupied by his entire family. Here, helping each other and solidarity are not rules, but they are a daily reality in the most natural way in the world. As a municipal councillor committed to revitalising the region, Barthélémy is fighting to encourage young people to come and live and work in the village.
“We’ve already managed to bring in several families. It brings me real joy,” confesses the young man, whose love of his work and his village is plain as day!
