~~By taking the small dirt road behind the church in the village of Santa Reparata di Balagna, gourmand visitors have no idea that they are about to find Ali Baba’s cave when they visit Paulette and Antoine Poli.
The farmers, who have recently been joined by their daughter Marie-Josèphe, share all of their produce and know-how here.
In their beautifully laid out shop one can find jams, tomato sauces, garden vegetables, olive oil, chestnut flour...
Seeing the extent of this produce, it’s hard to believe that this is solely the work of these three tireless workers.
In the world of the Poli family, one can’t tell if the days are longer than twenty-four hours or if the weeks are longer than seven days, but it can be surmised that this is a hard-working family. “We don’t think about it, we link the seasons and production.
Winter is olive oil and chestnut flour, and spring and summer is fruit and vegetable cultivation.
And then cattle breeding is all year round,” Antoine explains simply.
But beyond these multiple agricultural activities, the most impressive thing is how many different skills have been mastered.
Cutting beef, producing olive oil and jam-making really don’t have anything in common... apart from maybe a love of the land and a job well done that the Poli family has shared over the generations.
