It was in January 2019 that Catherine Le Beschu took her first steps as a livestock farmer. She is taking over the farm and cheese factory of Pascale Marchand and Jean Valentini, A Sciocca, which was established in 2000 in Croce, Castagniccia. An agricultural technician from 2004 until 2018, she decided to change direction at the age of 40.
“My experience in the field convinced me of the symbiosis that exists between the Corsican goat and the biodiversity of the island,” Catherine explains. The island’s diversity of plants is comes through in the produce. This maquis flavour really comes through in the fresh milk, it’s just amazing!” she says enthusiastically.
Today there are 70 goats in the herd. While she is guided by Jean, who is always on hand to provide valuable advice and pass on traditional expertise and know-how, there is no shortage of hard work at A Sciocca! In addition to direct sales (brocciu, casgiu frescu, passu, tomme and crottin cheese), Catherine also does the rounds in the villages of Orezza, from Croce to Piedipartinu, from Easter to December. “But it’s a real pleasure! I am really thriving in this new lifestyle that I have chosen,” concludes Catherine, beaming. Happiness is... among the goats!
