As the expression goes, some are born under a gooseberry bush, but it seems that Jean-Marc Blanwhalin was born under a chestnut tree! “I was born here in Sampolo, where I have been making chestnut flour since I was 15 years old. I began with my mother and then continued on my own, without ever leaving the village”, says Jean-Marc.
What ith the cultivating of his chestnut grove, the harvest, drying and taking the harvest to the mill, which he built with his own hands, the chestnut farmer has no time to be bored. Seeing his obvious enthusiasm for sharing everything about his flour with others, we soon understand that he did not choose this life by chance or as second best.
“I love my work and my life in the village. Of course it’s hard work, but I feel real joy when I see the first flour each year from my granite millstones. You know, I got them myself from a river bed near an abandoned mill.” This speaks volumes about the motivation of this passionate farmer who seems unwilling to see chestnut farming disappear from the island, along with the excellent reputation of Sampolo chestnut flour with its sweet and unique flavour.
