Not surprisingly for an ex-professional rugby player from Aubenas in the Ardèche region, Philippe Belanger is a strong-willed man. In 2004, Philippe decided, along with his wife Annie, to return to his family roots in Bonifacio to set up a farm. “With Annie we also ran a sports club in Paris where we gave advice on nutrition”, says Philippe. “We quickly realised that we had to go back to basics again, to find out what sort of healthy food to eat. What would be more normal than wanting to grow yourself the best vegetables!” For 10 years, Philippe worked hard at the job. Not an easy task with limestone soil! Sometimes the soil has to be prepared by hand because the mechanical tools cannot fit through the spaces. “The fact of having been a sportsman helps a lot in these situations!” Eight months ago, their eldest son, Jean-Baptiste, joined the team. He also has retired from professional rugby. Two more strong hands! As for Annie, she makes a variety of jams from the garden produce and other local fruit.
“It's a way of life that we have completely embraced”, concludes Philippe. “And we have loads more projects planned!” Today with their garden vegetables, producing oil and making jam, the Belangers are playing a winning game!
