Imagine a mammone (grandmother) standing over a copper cauldron, attentively watching freshly-picked oranges slowly simmering on a low flame… Well this is no rose-tinted stereotype but Jeanne Salvat, an highly active pensioner!

At the age of 71, she continues to work on the farm that she acquired in 1963, with her husband Joseph. After settling in, the newlyweds decided against their initial plan to plant a vineyard in favour of producing fruit. 69 acres are shared between a good number of varieties of citrus fruit, figs, kiwi fuit and apricots. Jeanne discovered farming at the same time as she discovered Corsica and the joys of motherhood. “Our daughters came into our lives very early on. We had to organise ourselves to ensure that I didn’t miss out on the important moments in the life of a mother.” And then those of a grandmother! Jeanne’s six grandchildren, whom she loves boundlessly, are the joy of her life.

“Ten years ago, I started making jam for them, using recipes passed on to me by my mother, using fruit that couldn’t be sold but that I didn’t want to waste. I used to observe how each fruit reacted to the cooking process and I found I had a passion for it!”

Her success with her little clan was quickly followed by similar success with gourmets. For her sixteenth birthday, Jeanne’s mother gave her a book on Corsica, with the following message inscribed on the flyleaf: “May Corsica bring you happiness.” Quite a beautiful premonition!
