It was behind the furnaces that Jean-Claude Crispi began working on products from the soil of the island that he was so fond of. Then came the opportunity in the mid-1980s to resume farming on the Costa Verde. “My wife Catherine and I began working on the family lands by San Giuliano. For years we focused on horticulture, but the crops were very greedy in terms of heating, and therefore energy.”
The couple began to think about switching to growing vegetables. Jean-Claude Crispi’s first organic vegetables were an immediate success. “We were pleased with how our vegetables were received, but we were conscious of the fact that we were limited by the size of our farm.” Meanwhile, there was a renewed interest in growing Helichrysums and the Crispis quickly realised that various essential oil producers were beginning to need young Helichrysum plants.
With the support of his son Marc-André, Jean-Claude goes to scrublands to harvest wild seeds in order to ensure the genetic integrity of the endemic plant. Today, the father and son continue to expand and modernise their farm by providing a large number of vegetables and aromatic plants to the professionals and individuals who come and knock on the “window” of their greenhouse.
