As a child, Raphaëlle spent every holiday in her mother’s native village of Cervioni. Having qualified as an agronomic engineer in 1993, she decided that she wanted to go and live in Corsica. A year later, while working on the irrigation platform in Miggliacciaru, the young woman met Francis, a citrus and kiwi fruit grower. With Francis at her side, she learned to work the land and discovered a deep-rooted need to make the best use of the natural resources available. Sharing their work led naturally to them becoming a couple!
In 2001, Raphaëlle decided to produce olives, hazelnuts and figs herself, on land owned, but left untouched, by her husband. At the same time, she set up an educational farm, where horses, donkeys, ponies, bees and many other animals currently live in harmony.
“It’s so important to teach children about our relationship with nature and everything we can do with it. Discovering the world of farming in this way is wonderful for small children and very rewarding for me!”
The difficult moments in Raphaëllel’s life – the last one being a fire in September 2013, which destroyed a large part of the family farm – have not dented her enthusiasm or her perseverance. “After the fire, people rallied round magnificently, we received a lot of support, and so I didn’t feel like giving up. I believe in what I do and if you enjoy your work, this type of life is well worth living.” A fine philosophy indeed.
