Entering Carole Fanet’s workshop feels a little like being propelled towards far-off horizons - the shapes, colours and motifs reflecting the artist’s many travels. From her childhood spent in Africa, Carole recalls exploring the use of red clay and modelling techniques: “It’s a material that reflects the African continent as a whole; firm and fragile at the same time,” she recalls. In New Caledonia she learned to perfect her techniques, observing colours and playing around with variations on natural elements.
“Learning to understand those places and their rich compositions was an essential part of my training. And what can you say about the inspiration Corsica offers? Here too the possibilities are practically endless. Being around nature helps nourish the imagination, and design ideas form over time, which feels like it’s been suspended: that feeling is unique to island life. Today, mixing materials and enamels is one of my main areas of research.”
In her workshop in Aregno, opened in 2011, (after spending 10 years in Algajola), Carol experiments, encounters, and escapes. “The material has to be “alive’, with its own personality. That’s what makes it unique.” For proof that this is the case, look no further than the bright, dazzling creations on display at the Caruli workshop.
