It was in his native village of Giovicacce that Stéphane Paquet translated into practice his desire to revitalise the interior of the island by reviving mountain agriculture and offering visitors the oppor-tunity to spend a few days enjoying the surroundings and lifestyle of the inhabitants of the upper Taravu valley. “Before these gites were built, the building housed the family’s chestnut drying room,” explains Sté-phane Paquet.

While others would have let time do its job, he preferred the challenge of restoring and repurposing the site. “In addition to the stone walls, I wanted to keep the original spirit of the building alive. I went to the forest to find, one by one, the chestnut wood beams that adorn the ceilings of each room. It was no small task but it was really important for me to use the symbolic chestnut wood, it was a kind of homage to my ancestors,” he explains.

This is not a place of ostentatious luxury, instead it is simply a friendly and comfortable little house for visitors seeking calm and relaxation in this picturesque village overlooking the river bed.
